Baby Names - Most Recent Top Baby Name List
May 8th, 2009 | by Kacie |
Emma is the new top baby girl name ending a 12 year reign for the name Emily.
Jacob remained king as the #1 boy name for 2008 continuing his position for the 10th straight year. This information came Friday from the Social Security Administration.
Biblical names still remain to be the top choice for boy names, while parents tend to use pop culture to inspire their girl names.
Emma debuted in 2002 as she officially made the top 10 list. Jennifer Aniston’s character "Rachel" named her baby Emma on the hit sitcom "Friends" that same year.
Little changes were made for the top baby names for boys or girls.
The latest line-up for girl names following Emma are Isabella, Emily, Madison, and Ava. Chloe inched her way up to make the top ten while the name Hannah dropped out.
The top five boy names remained the same for 2007 and 2008. Following Jacob were Michael, Ethan, Joshua, and Daniel. The name Alexander seems to have taken the place of Andrew.
"There’s something about naming a child that’s a very existential statement," said Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue. "As you read through this you see of recent immigration, religion, popular culture. Sometimes it’s just people who are admired."
Surprisingly, the Social Security Administration has only been compiling name lists since 1997. However, the agency offers names dating back to 1880.
