Pregnant women are sensitive to say the least. Anything to upset the tummy or cause question should be avoided when planning a baby shower. Here are some simple rules to follow:
DON’T
- Sushi: Unless California rolls or fully cooked, it is not a good idea to serve sushi at a baby shower because there may be parasites or other illness-inducing causes as a result of eating such foods.
- Fish: Can be a great food for the new baby because of the fatty acids that will boost brain development. However, be sure to check that the type of fish you are choosing does not have any traces of mercury
- No raw eggs: This includes raw cookie dough, eggs sunny side up, restaurant-made Caesar dressing, homemade eggnog, etc. Any egg white or yoke that is not fully cooked is not a good idea for a baby shower.
- Unpasteurized juices: Be sure to read labels, some labels in juices are not pasteurized, which is important to be sure to kill off bacteria and toxins. Make sure what your serving is safe for the new baby to come!
- Chinese food: The new mom-to-be could be craving spicy food as is normal with some pregnant women; however be sure that it is MSG FREE.
- Caffeine: Make sure that you have decaffeinated teas or sodas at your baby shower. You can include cocktails as long as they are alcohol-free for the mommy-to-be. Add some healthy fruit juices and the new baby will love it!
DO’s
- Protein such as beef, chicken, fish, and peanut butter are great selections to include because a pregnant body requires 10 extra grams of protein a day to support the growing baby, and that extra protein is not found in prenatal vitamins.
- Calcium can be included in a delicious desert and is necessary for healthy growing bones. Prenatal vitamins do not contain the amount needed every day. Great calcium sources include, milk, yogurt, cheese, almonds, and fortified orange juice. So break out your best cheesecake!
- Fiber rich foods will help the new baby and keep the new mommy feeling full and satisfied. Include a colorful snack mix that includes whole grain cereal, nuts, sunflower seeds, and dried fruits such as apples or pears that include their skin. Pastas are another fiber-rich addition.
Enjoy your baby shower all while keeping the new mommy happy and the growing baby healthy!
