Include Daddy in a Football themed baby shower. New daddies are becoming just as excited to bring home their new bundle of joy as mommies. Although, they may not be carrying the new baby . . . certainly they helped in creating it.
Sometimes including the men into your baby shower can make for the most memorable moments. Dads always add lots of humor. After moms have been carrying extra pounds for 7-8 months a good laugh is what they need. Healthy for the soul!
Not to mention, dad’s have just as much anxiety about the new child as the new mother. A baby shower for the couple is a great way to break through some of that tension and make a nice stress reliever.
Location:
Pick a nearby park, which has grills, some open space, and shade or if you have a big back yard, that would make for a good location as well.
Be sure to have several lawn/lounge chairs even if there are picnic benches. Have a special chair for the mom-to-be and dad-to-be. Make sure it is located in the shade so she will be comfortable.
Activities:
Kids can be a nice addition to this type of party if your friends are already blessed with children. Kids can join the festivities, fly kites, blow bubbles, etc.
Allow the guys to conjugate and do what boys do . . . which is normally rag on each other. Make men the entertainment and set them in charge of cooking the food. Guys love to grill, and they will be comfortable chatting there.
Divide the guys into two even teams of 3 or more men on each team. Have them play a flag football game (or touch if flags are not available). Set up cones at each end of the field for an official touch down zone. Make funny names for each team such as, the dirty diaper team, the cry babies, nipple suckers, etc. You get the point!
Set baby bottles full of water and Gatorade for the players to drink during break. This makes for great pictures. You may want to poke some extra big holes in the nipple of the bottles otherwise the guys will flip off the top and start to guzzle.
Prior to the game starting you may want to do some parenting warm-ups.
Parenting Warm-up Game:
Lay out 6 hula hoops in two rows of three, and a cone about five feet away. Get a baby carrier, and place a baby doll inside. Each team player has to run through the hula hoops (similar to football players running through tires), around the cone and back carrying the baby and carrier without dropping the baby.
The player must tag his teammate, and have his teammate repeat the same warm up drill. The team to complete the course in the fastest time gets a 10 yard advantage. - Note: if they drop the baby they have to start over.
Hand each team a dressed baby doll with a diaper under the clothing, and one fresh diaper. The team who changes the diaper and redresses the baby the best chooses whether they will kick off or receive.
Wrap the football in a diaper as the game ball, but have extras this is sure to get tossed many times. You may want to tape the diaper on ahead of time.
Be sure to pick up some pom poms for the girls and hand them out as favors. Pink or blue pom poms would be very appropriate. Enjoy the theme and do it up with noise makers and accessories galore. Guests should be encouraged to wear their favorite team jersey.
Food:
Here are some suggestions to make it easy on the hostess:
- Keep it simple with hot dogs and hamburgers, chicken, or ribs.
- Create a fruit basket so guests can stay refreshed.
- Pasta Salad would be a good addition to keep the energy level high.
- Coleslaw and Baked Beans are a BBQ signature.
- Some fun treat, cake, ice cream, popsicles; what ever is practical for your party.
Have a great time at your football themed baby shower.
